Why Knowing Your Body Composition Matters

Understanding the full picture of your health—beyond the scale.

According to the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare (AIHW), as of 2022, 66% of Australian adults and 28% of young people aged 5–17 were classified as overweight or living with obesity. These statistics are concerning—not just because of the numbers, but because of the silent health risks they reflect.

Conditions like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea and stroke often develop quietly, and many people remain unaware they’re at risk. So how can you get a clearer picture of your actual health status? It starts with understanding your body composition.

1. BMI Doesn’t Tell the Full Story

You may be familiar with BMI (Body Mass Index), but it has limitations. BMI only measures weight in relation to height—it doesn’t distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. This means that someone with a muscular build might be classified as “overweight” or “obese,” even if they’re metabolically healthy. Similarly, someone within the “normal” BMI range could still have a high percentage of body fat.

2. You Can Be “Skinny Fat”

It’s a common misconception that a slim appearance equals good health. In reality, some individuals may have a low body weight but still carry excess visceral fat—the type of fat that surrounds internal organs and is strongly associated with metabolic disease. This is sometimes referred to as being “skinny fat.” These individuals may be at the same risk for chronic disease as someone who is visibly overweight.

3. Tracking Body Composition Supports Better Health Goals

Unlike traditional scales, advanced body composition testing can track changes in fat massmuscle mass, and visceral fat over time. This is critical if you’re aiming to improve strength, metabolic health, or manage chronic conditions. Accurate data helps you stay motivated and gives you objective feedback that your efforts are working—even before it shows in the mirror or on the scale.

InBody 580 Scanning

Your scan will include:

      • Muscle mass and fat percentage

      • Visceral fat level (linked to cardiometabolic disease)

      • Segmental analysis (to identify imbalances or injury risks)

      • Phase angle (an indicator of cellular health and recovery potential)

This is a powerful tool to guide prevention, track progress, and personalise your health strategy.
